It is Expectorant, Demulcent, Stimulant, Anti-inflammatory, Antitussive, Antioxidant, Antianxiety, Antidepressant, Anti-stress, Anti-hyperlipidaemia, Anti-diabetic, Hepatoprotective, Memory Enhancer, Immunomodulatory, Neuroprotective, Analgesic, Antiulcer, Antiarthritic, Antiasthmatic, Antibacterial, Anticataract, Anticoagulant, Anti-Periodic, Anti-septic, Aromatic, Diuretic, Emmenagogue, Exhilarant, Expectorant, Febrifuge, Anticonvulsant and Antipyretic.

Seeds of the plant are Mucilaginous. Leaves are Anti-septic, Demulcent and Expectorant. Decoction of the leaves are Diuretic, Emmenagogue and Tonic. Decoction of the root is Anti-Periodic.

The herb is used in Malaria, Bronchitis, Cold and Coughs, Headaches, Lung Diseases, Abdominal Distention, Arthritis, Nasal congestion, Sinus congestion, Stress, Asthma, Diabetes Mellitus and gastric disorders. It purifies the air, clears the lungs, and proves to be an effective cardio tonic. It also lowers blood sugar levels and its powder is used for treating mouth ulcers. The herb is helpful in all kinds of cramps in the stomach. It is also used to treat colic, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, intestinal worms, physical tiredness, depression, short-term and long-term anxiety and insomnia.

Seeds of the plant are specially indicated in Dysentery, Gonorrhoea and Chronic Diarrhoea. The Indications of Leaves of the plant are Inflammations and Spasmodic Laryngitis. The Extract of the Leaves is indicated in Earache. Roots of the plant is indicated in Bowel Complaints. The Indications of Decoction of the leaves are Cough, Bronchitis, Catarrh, Gastric Disorders, Earache and Hepatic Disorders. The Indications of Decoction of root are Malarial Fever, Palpitation and Cardiac Debility.

Doses

  • Leaves 7- 12 gms
  • Seeds 5- 7 gms
  • The Raihan extract dosage range recommended is 300 mg – 2,000 mg for a single dose on a daily basis (Preventive therapy)
  • The Raihan extract dosage range recommended is 600 – 1800 mg daily in divided doses. (Curative therapy)
  • In diabetes, 2,500 mg dried leaf powder ingested daily, or one tsp. of the dried herb brewed daily in 1 cup of water have been used.
