SITE:           

Nape, four finger breadth down the point of seerumkolli varmam.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF INJURY:

Protrusion of tongue, rapid breathing, dyspnoea, facial paralysis, unconsciousness, and may even lead death if the injury is severe.

MANAGEMENT

The usual line of treatment in varmam therapy is to first treat the patient with the varmam physical therapy followed by drug therapy.

Varmam physical therapy:

Different methods are given in various texts.

Elakku murai (Relieving method)-1

Holding and raising the lower jaw and then massaging around the neck downwards moving the jaws both sides and extending the arms and legs.

Elakku murai (Relieving method)-2

Making the patient to sit and holding the legs folded with the chest tightly the patient is lifted up and then made to sit down and strongly a blow is given with elbow at the top of head, then neck is massaged with two fingers appropriately so that the nerve roots at the nape are stimulated. Then after saying prayers water is sprinkled on the face, the patient will regain consciousness. 

 Varmam drug therapy:

Medicated oil of musumusukkai (Mukia maderaspatana) is given for oil bath and oral administration.

Oral Medicines:

Porridge of venthayam (fenugreek)

After effects:

300 days after injury in this varmam site may produce symptoms like nape pain, breathing difficulty, dimness of vision, tinnitus, depression etc.

Note: Self application of techniques in varma therapy may produce severe adverse effects. Supervision of a Siddha physician is mandatory.
